Philip Glass’s opera Akhnaten conducted by ARTHUR FAGEN in Atlanta was extremely well-received

The Atlanta premiere of Philip Glass’s opera Akhnaten conducted by Arthur Fagen on January 23 and 25 has opened to an overwhelming public response at the Schwartz Center. The composer was present at the last performance, and Pierre Ruhe of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote that “ It was the hottest ticket of the season, with sold out performances and great acclaim at evening’s end.....And Atlanta Opera gave it the same level of preparation and care it gives its usual fare: mostly well sung; smart and literal stage direction (by Richard Kagey); an orchestra, conducted by Arthur Fagen, that caught the sweep of the music ....” Mr. Fagen will return in April to Atlanta to conduct Wagner’s ‘Der Fliedende Hollaender’ ( The Flying Dutchman).

The first week of January, Arthur Fagen crowned a busy 2008 year conducting New Year’s Concert of the Haydn Orchestra in several cities including Merano, Bolzano and Trento. Mr. Fagen started the New Year with a festive program with works by Strauss, Anderson, Rogers, Berlin and Sousa, and was described by the critic as a conductor “with an exceptional sparkling gesture and rhythmically incisive.” ( Please see last reviews)

Continuing his flourishing relationship with the Atlanta Opera, Mr. Fagen will conduct the sold out Atlanta premiere of Akhnaten by Philip Glass on January 23 and 25.
